SOUTHAMPTON’s very own fundraising Superman who has cycled an incredible 50,000 miles on a static bike has vowed to stay in the saddle for another 25,000 miles.

Having raised more than £2m by on a cycling machine aboard a Red Funnel ferry, Gus McKechnie said he will not be stopping there.

Over seven long years and an incredible 4,500 trips across the Solent he completed his epic challenge for charity - raising £90,000.

The 38-year-old, who has battled physical disabilities since birth, has been a familiar sight for passengers travelling with Red Funnel as he cycled the equivalent of twice round the equator in memory of his family.

But this is just the latest of many missions which the former Southampton Solent University student has embarked on during the past 19 years.

His fundraising total currently stands at an amazing £2.1m and he is determined to keep it rising.

Gus, who was born with a form of cerebral palsy, said: “When I set out to complete this challenge I was just looking to raise vital funds for charities that had worked so hard to help my family and that are close to my heart.

“Red Funnel had kindly offered me the space on board their ferries and soon after I started on board it became clear it was more than just a fundraising mission, I was often a sign of determination to those suffering from life-threatening illnesses.

“There were times when the journey seemed so long and I thought about stopping, but the overwhelming support and encouragement from customers and staff at Red Funnel really kept my focus and resolve.

“I am absolutely chuffed to be completing the full 50,000 miles.”

His list of achievements includes world records for adaptive rowing challenge and an impressive ten marathons.

The money raised from the cycle will be donated to the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust and the Haemochromatosis Society – in memory of his mum who died of ovarian cancer and his brother who lost his battle with haemochromatosis.
