SOUTHAMPTON Central railway station was transported back to the era of the steam locomotive as a historic engine arrived in the city.

The arrival of the 44932 London Midland and Scottish Railways (LMS) Black Five delighted trainspotters and rail passengers alike as it stopped off in the city yesterday.

Daily Echo:

It visited the city as part of a heritage trip across the south run by Cathedrals Express.

Dozens of people enjoyed the 1950s and 1960s-eras restored carriages on the route which carried on to Sherbourne in Dorset and Yeovil in Somerset.

The 44932 is one of just 18 Black Fives saved for preservation after being withdrawn from service in 1968.
