Police believe blaze started deliberately at home in Shirley, Southampton

Daily Echo: Detectives have appealed for witnesses to come forward Detectives have appealed for witnesses to come forward

A SOUTHAMPTON family were targeted in a terrifying suspected arson attack.

Police believe the home was broken into, before a sofa cushion was placed on a gas hob and the hob turned on.

The family returned home to the property in Shirley Avenue at about 7.45pm yesterday to find a fire in the kitchen.

Firefighters were called to tackle the blaze but the kitchen was completely destroyed, while the rest of the house suffered smoke damage.

An investigation has been launched, and police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Detective Constable Lucy Stewart said: “The incident occurred at some time between 4pm and the time when the family got home to find the fire. It appears that a sofa cushion was placed on the gas hob and the hob turned on, causing the fire.

“This was a very serious and dangerous incident; it is extremely lucky that no-one was hurt.

“I am appealing for anyone with any information about this incident to come forward and speak to us, to help us find the person or people responsible.”

Anyone with information should contact DC Stewart at Shirley police station on 101.

No it's ignorant people like you. A family have been victimised and all you can do is slag off an area. Do you not think the victims may see your comments? To be fair I am sure the victims are decent and educated enough to laugh at your stupidity.

No doubt they'll want to move out of such a nice area after this attack

Shirley Avenue is closed for gas works. No connection to this incident. You have to have money or a sympathetic lender (historically of course) to live in Shirley Avenue I'll be interested to find out more about the occupants of the house.

Thank You do you know why Romsey road from Anglesea rd to the junction with Trebourba way (hope I spelt it right) is closed?
Went to the Gym up that road came out went to drive home road closed diverted up Anglesea rd onto a road with parking on both sides restricting only one car through at a time & with two way traffic this leads to tailbaks across Winchester road or down Anglesea rd.
With the experience I had today there's going to be an accident there.
If that's because of Gas works why wasn't it done over night or on Sunday?
Who's in charge of allowing these road closures?
