Controversial wind turbine farm plan thrown out

First published in News

COUNCILLORS have thrown out plans to build a 14 turbine wind farm north of Winchester.

EDF energy renewable wanted to build the two mile square wind farm, at Bullington Cross but councillors supported the officers recommendation to refuse.

The turbines would have been up to 126 metres tall on farmland near to the A34/A303 junction Planning officers at Winchester, Test Valley and Basingstoke and Deane councils all recommended that the scheme near should be rejected.

In the end councillors across all three districts voted to agree with the officers recommendation to reject the scheme by a majority decision.

The meeting at Winchester Guildhall heard objections range from the MoD and nearby Popham airfield that it would impact a low level flying zone, ecology experts that species would be harmed by the development and that it would have a negative visual impact on the area.

Good decision.
Now let's find somewhere with cheaper property values and people who aren't listened to when they object to these eye sores and build them there.
As long as the gentry can't see them from their house it will be fine.

Good decision.
Those giant turbines are not appropriate in densely populated lowland Britain.
Now, lets get solar farms on the roof of every warehouse, supermarket, shopping centre, leisure centre etc etc.
That and to make all new build homes be more efficient : solar thermal and PV should be fitted at the construction stage.
Make more use of ground source heat pumps
but no more giant turbines on land.

Remarkable. Everyone accepts the need for alternative energy sources but 'eye offence' wins over. Pathetic

I think the MoD and Popham airfield may have had valid points too

Ignoring aesthetics, NIMBYism, tourism, politics & house prices…just look at some hard facts –

According to the wind industry, UK currently has 1,278 Windfarms (may 2014) comprising –
9,912 Turbines, + approx 18,000 small units,
Total Capacity = 23 GW

• • As I write this UK wind is contributing just 0.7 GW a mere 2% to our grid demand !! (we are importing more than that from France & Holland) & is operating at just 3% (Gas is 70%); !!...a tad better than the last 2 weeks !! - Look here - http://www.gridwatch

Also - http://www.ukpowerge

• • Weather systems can be huge, Europe has had high pressure dominating for weeks, so sod all wind from Ireland to Poland, Italy to Scotland.

• • See the live production from your local RWE windfarm - http://www.rwe.com/w

Note: 1. A minus fig indicates them taking power from grid to rotate blades.
2. Capacity in MW but output in kW, so ÷ output by 1,000 to compare.

• • And this is how much EXTRA we pay per mth for low density intermittent ‘green’ energy - http://www.variablep
itch.co.uk/finance/ & yes the figs are £millions/mth.

• • Lots more info from-
Department of Energy & Climate Change ( DECC ) & Grid figs
( Digest of United Kingdom Energy Statistics ( DUKES)

• Do you really think that’s a sensible way to use precious resources ??

I won’t even start on the ‘community benefits’ scam.

It is a very dangerous world, when politics trump science & engineering facts.
