FROM stormtroopers to daredevils – people came from far and wide to soak up the sun at a family fun day.

More than 6,000 people filled Testwood recreation ground in Totton for the event which featured an escapologist who hung from a crane 60 feet above the crowds.

Families were asked to deposit a tin of food at the entrance of the free event in support of Youth and Families Matter Food Bank based at the town’s Testwood Baptist Church.

More than 600 tins were collected, which will help replenish stocks at the food bank which has seen its demand double in the past year.

John Cunningham, one of the organisers who received a civic award from Totton council for their efforts in staging the event said: “We were delighted that 6,000 people attended and thank our volunteers for their hard work. We will be back next year.”

Visitors were joined by Star Wars stormtroopers and characters from Planet of the Apes.

There was also live music, competitions and the chance to try out a Formula 1 racing car simulator as well as displays and stalls by schools, businesses and community organisations.
