DIG out the sun cream and stock up on ice cream – Hampshire has basked in its hottest day of the year.

And while things are hotting up at the World Cup in Brazil, the mercury in the county rose higher than Rio.

Yesterday was the hottest day of the year so far with temperatures as high as 24F (75F) and we’re set to keep the World Cup weather throughout the weekend.

But we should enjoy it while it lasts, as weather forecasters have warned the good weather may not last long.

And the sun is good news for those planning to hit the beaches across the south coast this weekend.

It will also be welcomed by those organising summer events often blighted by our unpredictable climate.

Tomorrow will see dozens of women racing through Southampton Common at the city’s first Women’s Running event.

Meanwhile, West End Carnival will be taking to the streets, celebrating the countries of the world with entertainment, dancing and competitions.

And on Sunday schoolchildren will be taking part in the Junior Park Run in Riverside park Sunday to celebrate National Sports Week.

However, the Met Office has said there are early signs that rain could be on its way.

A spokesman said: “It’s uncertain how long it will go on for.

There are some early signs that this fine weather might be coming to an end.”

But, while the heat is on, health bosses have issued a warning to stay safe in the sun.

While people get outside and make the most of the weather, South Central Ambulance Service is bracing itself for extra emergency calls.

Operations director Mark Ainsworth said: “The warm weather always proves to be a particularly busy time for us, with the heat exacerbating patients’ pre-existing conditions and people who sustain injury or illness while they are out in the sun.

“We would like to encourage everyone to have fun in the sun but to look after yourselves and use 999 and A&E services in the event of a serious or life-threatening situation only.”
