Carnival fever gripped Hampshire yesterday as communities basked in the summer sun.

Crowds flocked to West End’s High Street and Netley Marsh today to see the carnival processions make its way through the villages.

The procession in West End, the centrepiece of the village Carnival Week, had a theme of countries from around the world.

Daily Echo:

Local school children, community groups and organisations, businesses and scout and brownie groups all got in on the act.

Meanwhile in Netley Marsh, where the theme was As Time Goes By, one carnival float celebrating landmarks in the history of the old Wembley Stadium included a prominent reference to England's World Cup triumph in 1966.

It was the cruellest of ironies, coming just hours after England's earliest exit from the competition since 1958.
