A WOMAN'S body has been found by refuse workers on a city street this morning.

The discovery was made by binmen doing their rounds on Millbrook Road East, Southampton at 8.30am this morning.

Bourne Road and Edith Haisman Close were also closed following the find.

Police officers were on the scene manning the cordon and carrying out investigations for around four hours.

A Hampshire Constabulary spokesman said in a statement: "At 8.34am on Monday, June 23 refuse workers discovered a body close to a bin area on Millbrook Road East."

They added that a post-mortem would take place in due course.

Fire crews were called to the scene around 10.30am andhelped to erect a large white sheet around where the body was found.

An employee from Wedderburn Shopfitting, on Millbrook Road East, said she had driven past the scene at about 8.35am this morning.

She said: “I knew there was something going on.

“The bin lorry was there and there were people sat on the wall. They looked like refuse workers.

“The police were there and paramedics, I think they had only just arrived. There were lots of police around that area.

“There was a couple of police cars and a paramedic car, they closed the road off after that."

Police have described the discovery to the Daily Echo as "an unexplained death" and removed the cordon around 12.30pm, after the body was taken away by ambulance.

Paul Laslett of Brightside Personal Training, in Millbrook Road East, said he arrived for work at 6.30am but saw nothing suspicious.

He said: "There was nothing out of the ordinary this morning and we had people in over the weekend and they didn't see anything either.

"The police have been round and they have been very good at reassuring everyone. It's ot nice to have this happen on your doorstep but the police have done a good job keeping everything under control."
