  • Body found by binmen this morning
  • Discovery made in Millbrook Road East in Southampton
  • Police have cordoned off the scene
  • Refuse workers found the body at 8.34am
  • Roads closed by officers

2:04pm

As offiers have left the scene, we'll bring the live blog to a close, and point readers towards this article, which sums up what is known so far.

1:00pm

Christine Ashton, 52, retired, from Edith Haisman Close, said: "This is twice in the same road.

"This is such a safe, quiet little area so to have this happen twice in one week has brought home quite rapidly that we should be wary.

"I never have felt safe walking around this area on my own because of groups of youngsters.

"You don't even feel safe in your own home anymore."

12:58pm

Carol Byrne, 43, a shop assistant from Edith Hasman close, said the body was found in the bins of a block of flats next door to Mountbatten Business Centre.

The mum-of-two who has lived there nine years, said: "I'm quite surprised. It's a non-residential area. It just seems to be unlucky with deaths.

"If there has been a murder it just makes it unsafe because it would be the second in just over a week.

"This is a family street and for children to go to school and see the road blocked by police, it's quite shocking.

"I hope that nothing has happened. I hope that it's a death that couldn't be prevented because there are a lot of teenagers that live on this estate that walk up and down that road at night.

"I have always felt that Southampton is not a rough city."

12:49pm

Debbie Wilson, 45, an ice cream maker and mum-of-three from Edith Haisman Close, said: "It makes me feel vulnerable and unsafe in my own neighbourhood and I have lived here for 15 years.

"I'm in shock. I was wondering what was going on when I saw the police then my daughter came and told me what it was.

"If my children go out, what's going to happen to them?

"It's always a nice neighbourhood to live in and I don't want it to start going downhill."

12:45pm

The police took down the cordon just after 12.30pm.

12:42pm

Daily Echo: The sheets surrounding the scene are taken down.

12:25pm

Roman Potschynok, a chartered surveyor for Welling Partnership, a chartered building surveyor based in the Mountbatten Business Centre, said he had realised something was wrong when he drove past at 8.40am.

“As I was driving into entrance, into the drive there was a refuse truck parked up and bin collection men sitting on the wall smoking, which I thought was strange, I haven't seen that before.

“They were sitting right next to the truck, in line with the cab.

“I think police arrived not long afterwards.

“It's just a shame that somebody ends up in that situation,” he added

Chris Williams, director of Shire Systems Ltd, in the Mountbatten Business Centre, within the cordon and 100 yards from the scene, said: “One of my staff phoned me prior and said you can't get into work because they have blocked the access.

“When I arrived there was a dustcart.

“I saw refuse workers sitting around - obviously they were trying to come to grips with what happened.

“I guess if I found the same on the doorstep when I came into work I would be suitably distressed.”

11:55am

Hampshire Constabulary have just issued another statement.

it reads: "At 8.34am on Monday, June 23 refuse workers discovered the body of a woman close to a bin area on Millbrook Road East.

"A section of Millbrook Road East has been closed between Bourne Road and Edith Haisman Close.

"At this time the death is being treated as unexplained.

"A post mortem examination will take place in due course."

11:54am

An ambulance has now arrived on the scene to remove the body.

11:49am

Police have described the discovery to the Daily Echo as "an unexplained death."

11:48am

Kate Tasak, 28, who lives nearby in Somerset Terrace, Southampton, was walking along Millbrook Road East when she saw the cordon.

The mum-of-one said: "It's terrible and I'm afraid because it could be dangerous for anybody.

"I have never seen anything like this and I've lived here three years.

"I was going for a walk and I saw the police cordon. I thought somebody might have killed someone when I saw it."

Justin New, 41, from Bourne Road, said: "It's quite worrying. It's normally quite quiet here apart from traffic. It's all a bit frightening."

Another resident who asked not to be named said: "I'm shocked. It's really quiet round here. I can't believe it. This area is normally absolutely brilliant."

11:36am

Ernest Williams, 64, retired, from Bourne Road, said: "I heard the dustbin man come and I heard lots of noise outside, then they blocked the road off.

"It's terrible. It's the second time they've found a body [following the discovery of Belinda Dalby's body on June 13]. I wondered what was going on."

11:14am

An employee at Plug and Play Design, a design business on the Mountbatten Business Centre within the cordon, who did not want to be named, said she was let through the cordon by police and officers had already been around to ask if any employees had seen anything during the weekend.

“There were just a lot of police officers around and the area was cordoned off.

“There were paramedics as well.

“We were trying to figure out what was going on.

“We were just asked if we'd seen anything over the weekend [by the police] and we hadn't.

“It's shocking and obviously it's upsetting.”

11:09am

A Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said a crew from St Mary's were asked to attend at 10.26am and at this stage all that is known is that they are “assisting another agency”.

11:05am

Residents and staff close to the scene are in dark as to what is going on.

A worker for Vankru Performance Cycling, on Millbrook Road East, said: “The road's closed, we have no idea what's going on.

“I asked the police and they said it was something that happened at the weekend.
“There was some blue tape and some police officers.”

10:39am

An employee from Wedderburn Shopfitting, on Millbrook Road East, said she had driven past the scene at about 8.35am this morning.

She said: “I knew there was something going on.

“The bin lorry was there and there were people sat on the wall. They looked like refuse workers.

“The police were there and paramedics, I think they had only just arrived. There were lots of police around that area.

“There was a couple of police cars and a paramedic car, they closed the road off after that.

“It's always a shock especially as it's the second one in a week or so, it's a bit worrying.”

10:39am

10:30am

At the moment, it is not known if the discovery is being treated as suspicious or not by police officers.

Don't see how it suggests murder - could just as easily be a homeless person looking for shelter in a bin shed.

I wonder how close is this to where the young lady was murdered last week, and if the 2 were known to each other? It is worrying that 2 bad incidents should happen so close in such a short space of time.

It's the other end of Millbrook road east, close to the train station. Doubt the two are related.

Southampton is a great place for corpses, traffic, rapes and home invasions. The tourist board should get on that straight away instead of focussing on all that titanic nonsense.

We live in Waterloo Road and were wondering why our bins hadn't been emptied. Now we know why. Heard sirens, but we do all the time here! So sad another life gone. Sign of the times I'm afraid. If it isn't fights, it's drugs. Fed up with it.

What are you on about? The society of St. James has premises throughout the city. Just because this one happened to be near one of them doesn't mean they're related.
