IT was the moment the 'Dirty Dozen' abandoned their high-performance cars and took to the water.

Drivers taking part in an annual fundraising stunt organised by TV and radio star Chris Evans were given a taste of yacht-racing in the Solent.

Seven Ferraris and a group of other expensive vehicles dubbed the Famous Five arrived at the Chewton Glen Hotel in New Milton last week.

The 12 drivers had bid for a place in the event during a live on-air auction last November.

The group cruised over to one of Lymington’s best-known eateries, The Haven.

The seafront restaurant, which recently reopened after a major refurbishment, is run by Rob Smith, who has gone into partnership with the broadcaster and DJ.

After a luxury breakfast the drivers boarded three 54ft yachts supplied by Lymington Yacht Charters and spent the morning at sea before returning to The Haven for lunch.

It was the latest addition to the Chris Evans Magnificent Seven and Famous Drive and Dine, which each year raises about £1m for the BBC Children In Need Appeal.

Rob Smith said: “Some of the drivers had never been on a yacht before. It was a completely new experience.”

Chris Evans was presenting his breakfast show from Glastonbury and was unable to attend.
