Hampshire's sailing hero Sir Ben Ainslie has been handed a multi-million-pound grant by the Government to build a base for his America’s Cup team.

As previously reported the Lymington-based multiple Olympic gold medallist decided to build the centre in Portsmouth, which is expected to create 90 jobs for the city.

Yesterday, as Prime Minister David Cameron announced the £7.5m grant at Number 10, he praised the project which he believes will deliver a real sporting and economic boost to the UK.

He added: “This is an exciting and historic challenge and I hope the whole country can get behind Sir Ben’s campaign.”

Sir Ben had a chance to talk through his plans with the Prime Minister, which will include sports science and fitness facilities, an apprenticeship training scheme and a visitor centre showcasing the sport.

Sir Ben said: “We hope through our journey to bring the cup home to Britain we will inspire more young people to get involved in the sport, along with supporting the growth of the marine sector in the Solent area to match the country’s F1 innovation hub.”
