THEY came in their thousands to declare war on cancer at the annual Race for Life event in Southampton today.

The Common was transformed into a sea of pink as an army of more than 6,000 women from across Hampshire and even further afield part in the annual event.

Daily Echo:

This year £385,000 has been raised by the runners to help vital cancer research.

Before the main race started there was a carnival atmosphere as runners gathered together, many wearing elaborate pink costumes.

Pink wigs, tutus, pink headbands, fairy wings were the fashion flavours of the day and some even donned superhero costumes.

But nearly every woman taking part was also bearing a poignant message on the back of their colourful costumes to remember loved ones they had lost and celebrate those who had survived or were battling the disease.

The runners gathered together for a minutes silence before getting into gear with an energetic aerobic warm-up to prepare them for the 5k route around The Common.

And as they made a final dash for the finish, many held their hands aloft in celebration together while others hugged to celebrate a race well run.

my wife has been doing it for 13 years now and it is getting more expensive to enter .
it seems as if you are paying for the other attractions on the common rather than the race itself
although the reason for doing it are still there it doesn't seem to have the feel that it had years ago and it will become a market stall with a race in years to come

Because the echo are just plain lazy with their " that'll do, minty will be happy because the story is out there" attitude.

No complaints about it closing parts of the avenue and other roads completely for the same duration as the sky ride partially closed it and other roads, yet the sky ride got complained about for it, go figure, it's just an irrational hatred of 2 wheeled(or more) vehicles powered by cake.

Or maybe people don't mind a bit of disruption when it's raising thousands for charity!?!...

Having personally experienced abuse from people during a charity race for "being in their way for no good reason", I think that's a load of nonsense.

Interesting comment. It does appear sexist on the surface, as only can enter this race, and there isn't a male equivalent. However, there are other ways men can raise money for cancer research, as well as contribute to this event by sponsoring those competing.
My Uncle has just survived cancer, whereas a friend's dad has an inopperable tumour in his brain with 6 months left of life. I cannot begrudge the stirling efforts these women have made based on sexual discrimination, as they all do remarkably well, raise a ton of money, and all the research helps find a cure.

Personally? Nothing, many others however, raised thousands of pounds for charity by being sponsered to do a certain number of laps or miles, there were also numerous charity boxes and such.

One day's disruption out of 365, and it generates the vitriolic outburst you've just made. How intollerent.
And they picked a Sunday, to minimise disruption. And they advertised it well in advance to alert those people who are dependent on bus services or who need to get into the town centre so that alternative plans could be made by those individuals, such as taxis and alternative routes.
I find your comment incredibly selfish, intollerent and judgmental (especially when categorising all those who took part as 'scum').
