City's Tory leader launches MP election bid

Daily Echo: Royston Smith Royston Smith

Southampton’s Tory party leader has launched his bid to become the next MP for the city’s Itchen seat.

Royston Smith launched his General Election campaign with the help of a team of supporters who spent the day leafleting thousands of homes across the city.

Cllr Smith contested the seat in 2010, narrowly losing out to Labour MP and former minister John Denham by 192 votes.

Mr Denham has served as MP in the city for the past 23 years alongside his colleague and fellow Labour MP Alan Whitehead who represents Southampton Test.

Speaking about why he is bidding to take the seat, Cllr Smith said: “I want to stand for Parliament to represent the many people I have lived with, grown up with, worked with and at times, struggled with.

“I want to represent Southampton because I live here – I don’t live here in order to win a seat in Parliament. There is more than a subtle difference.”

Cllr Smith will be in the running against Labour candidate Rowena Davis, a former Peckham councillor who now lives in Bitterne Park.

He said: “Southampton is where I was born and have lived for most of my life, but for a stint in the Royal Air Force. Southampton is home for me and my family. That is why I want to represent this constituency in Parliament.”

On Royston's Twitter timeline yesterday, a gentleman complains that he received a personally-addressed 'thank you' card from him after the election - only to then find another 17 dumped in his dustbin.

So if you do get a leaflet from Royston, then lucky you! It appears that at least one member of Royston's leafletting team is not quite as committed to the cause as he believes...

The comments are predictable. The first two posters must stalk these comment sections.

Try taking a step back and breathe before you post, always the first to go on the defensive which says a lot about whom you support.

As a swing voter, you do Labour no favors and just re-enforce why we shouldn't vote for them. Always full of mouth and no action.

The first two posters were commenting on the FACT that this 'news idem' had been reported a few days previous, and had received many comments from all points on the political spectrum.

My comment and that of Lone Ranger were in no way defensive, and were not even comments about Royston Smith, they were, as stated, comments that the News item was not News.

I'm not suggesting anything. You just always appear to be the first to comment on certain reports and letters.

I find nothing wrong with that, but it does make others feel you have sense of a one way mind.

Maybe I shouldn't mention others as i'm speaking for myself here.

I can only speak for myself, but you appear have this obsession that you can't see outside the box. You have all your eggs in one basket.

Yes well take a look at the TUC board all but 1 at the time was Right Wingers, and refuse to call a General Strike even when the majority (rank and file) was calling for a General Strike, the TUC board block it, The TUC board did not even want the mass demo and rally in London they had to be cornered and force into it by the rank and file, it was the rank and file that organise it the TUC board did not want any thing to do with it. The TUC board actted the same way as they did in the pass, like in the General strike it was the TUC board that stop other unions from carrying on with the gerneral strike and left the Coal Miners high and Dry, in the 80's the TUC refused to back the miners strike then, it took the Socialist party to organise anti-poll-tax to bring about change, made the next government to scared to act, if the TUC acted when ask to by the rank and file then this government would of been gone and the next would be to scared to act, and I have been more right than wrong, like I was right about the Labour Council getting into power when it did, and I was right that they would carry on with the same policy as the Torys just that they will do it in there way, I was right about Smithy losing his MP battle with JD and that it would be close result, Majority of People want this Government gone, but they also don't want a Labour Government but most will vote the lesser of the evils and that is the Labour party, I was also right about Keith Morel in Coxford retaining his council ward seat.
