FRIENDS of a Southampton park have been bringing thousands of residents together for a weekend long sports extravaganza.

Rugby, football, dancing and live music – it was all on offer at the St James’ Park Community Games.

After the London Olympics in 2012 organisers for the Upper Shirley park wanted to find a way to encourage people across Hampshire to be more active in a fun and friendly way.

This inspired the community games which were kickstarted by British diver and Olympic silver medallist Peter Waterfield and attracted more than 2,000 people from across the city this year.

On day one residents had the chance to experiment with team games with gym instructors at the event as well as a boxing workshop and park groups including the park’s outdoor gym and climbing wall.

And the second day brought henna tattoo stalls, Bollywood dancing workshops and live music from Southampton musicians as well as food from Southampton Thai and Caribbean restaurants.
