AN academic from Southampton has clinched a prestigious geographical award for his work exploring the impact of climate change.

Professor John Dearing has received the Murchison Award (2014) from the Royal Geographical Society (RGS).

The Southampton University Physical Geography lecturer has been commended for more than three decades work exploring the impacts of environmental change.

He has worked in Bangladesh and China studying tipping points in ecosystems and whether measures designed to alleviate rural poverty can cause irreversible damage to the environment. Professor Dearing said he was “truly humbled” at the accolade.
