Controversial TV documentary Immigration Street is to be filmed in Southampton, it was revealed today.

Channel 4 has commissioned Love Productions to make the six-part series featuring the residents of a multi-cultural city centre community.

The show is a follow-up to the highly-controversial TV series Benefits Street which was screened onto TV screens in British homes last year.

Cameras will follow the lives of some of the residents of Derby Road for the series which currently has the working title Immigration Street.

Love Production's Creative Director for Factual Kieran Smith has been the executive producer of Make Bradford British, My Last Summer, and Benefits Street and will oversee this series.

He said: “Immigration is one of the most keenly debated subjects in the UK right now and therefore it is incredibly important that we reflect the honest experiences of people who have settled in the UK and come to consider it as home.”

The series is set to air in early 2015.

Earlier comments about these kind of programmes being designed to provoke a reaction are right.

When I was a nipper, Derby Road had bad reputation and was a good place to get your head kicked and/or licked - and this was before recent immigrations!!

Section from Wikipedia:

"In the 1960s and 1970s, the area was notorious as Southampton's red-light district with high crime rates. Frustrated with the inaction of the city council and police, over 2,000 people marched from Derby Road to the civic centre. Following this "march of neglect", the Queen visited the area and a cash injection of half a million pounds followed. However, by the 21st century, little had changed. In the year 2000 a report highlighted that the urban renewal area encompassing Nicholstown "exhibits both the highest levels of unfitness and disrepair ... in the city" and the area was still very much a red light district in 2004"

So nothing really new here - the current residents are just the latest people struggling in the area. Some are honest, some are not. Some lazy, some hard working. Race really does not have much to do with it, relative poverty does. [and I am a tory by nature, not some bleeding heart liberal!)

Have you been to Derby Road? Have you been lucky enough to visit some of the shops where they sell fresh food at lower prices than supermarkets and you are made to feel most welcome.

If people open their minds to different cultures you can only benefit from it.

Give it a try, rather than sit on your soap box.

I would wager that the Derby Road is a lot safe, albeit possibly less interesting, than when **** sailors of all nationalities would wander drunkenly up there in search of some "relaxation" between punch-ups!

People tend to look at the past with rose-tinted glasses - they forget that in Southampton there genuinely were no-go areas and pubs where you we guaranteed to get a good kicking with no sympathy from the law. And as for Portsmouth pubs....well something never change!

Sad that another television programme will pander to the thickest. So much misinformation over immigration. This will just further wrong views of groups such as BNP, EDL and UKIP. Southampton has been multicultural for many years. City has prospered due to it. Now those who do not like anyone foreign, coloured, gay, or of other faiths will be using this programme to further their racist and homophobic views. The programme makers should be told their actions are irresponsible. Will do nothing for any part of the community or the city.

I also work in other areas where immigration is less and I tell you what, the sights there are shameful, the opposit to those in the derby rd area. Most of our own people are the biggest drain.

Personally I would find it interesting to compare the crime rates Derby road in the past.

As you say it’s always been a troubled area but when I lived in the area for a short while I had the general feeling that it was gradually improving, largely due to the Sikh and Muslim communities that where less tolerant of anti social behaviour in there neighbourhood.

I know Sikhs and Muslims have had their troubles in the past but they seem to have worked out how to peacefully coexist now.

I hope that the documentary explores some of these issues, however I imagine that if it does ratings won’t deem it a successful endeavour
