A SOUTHAMPTON couple on holiday could hold vital information that may help police solve a mystery that has left them baffled.

The pair, who were enjoying a sunshine break on the Greek island of Crete, could hold the clue to the international search for a missing pensioner.

Robert Arthur Jones went missing while on holiday to Crete last month, and police are now urging other holidaymakers to come forward and help them piece together his movements.

A visitor’s book at the Souda Bay Second World War Cemetery is signed by the 73-year-old former soldier on June 18, three entries before Terry and Ruth French from Southampton signed the book on the same day.

Now police in North Wales, who are helping Greek authorities, want to speak to Mr and Mrs French in the hope that they may hold information that can help them trace the missing pensioner or may have captured him on camera in any holiday snaps taken at the cemetery.

Mr Jones, known as Arthur, began his holiday on June 17 and has not made contact with family or friends since June 18.

The keen walker, from North Wales, is described as being 5ft 6in, medium build, with short grey hair and a grey moustache.

Daily Echo:

Superintendent Steve Williams said: “We know that Arthur has attended there on June 18, probably around the early morning time.

“The visitor’s book shows that there were a number of British people there on the same day.”

“Our hope is that someone remembers seeing or even speaking to him.”

“I would also ask that if anyone took photographs there to check whether Arthur is in the background as it may identify the clothing Arthur was wearing.”

Anyone with any information should contact their local police force on 101 quoting the North Wales Police reference number R103354.
