SOUTHAMPTON pensioners have better access to knee replacement surgery than almost anywhere else in the country, a survey has revealed.
The number of replacements per 10,000 people over 65 in the city is 95.7, below only Erewash with 107.9.
It is a far cry from the lowest rate in the country in North Staffordshire with just 15.1 procedures.
A spokesperson from NHS Southampton City CCG said: “As the organisation that plans and buys health services for the city, quality of life for our population is always a priority. We know that knee replacements can vastly improve people’s lives and keep them fitter and more active for longer.
“We are delighted to hear that such encouraging numbers of people in Southampton now have access to knee replacement surgery. However we are not complacent and will continue to work with our partners to ensure the best possible access to all health services in the city.”
It was part of a Royal College of Surgeons study analysing surgery rates for a variety of procedures on pensioners.
Figures also revealed over 65s on the Isle of Wight have good access to hernia operations.
