Hilda Wallis celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by family and friends at the Blue Keys Hotel in Northlands Road, Southampton.

A former secretary of the Southampton Allotment and Garden Society she enjoys singing and making tapestries.

Hilda, of Darwin Road, Southampton, said: “Gardening runs in my family and both my grandfathers were professional gardeners.

“I enjoyed my time at the society and was so touched when they gave me a party when I stepped down.

“I also love singing and have sung in four choirs and at one concert party as a soloist, although my voice is not what it used to be.”

The mother-of-three also has four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, some of whom came from France to celebrate her special day.

She grew up in Lewisham and moved to Hampshire in 1940 after marrying husband William, a gardener who went on to make Spitfire planes during the Second World War.
