Park and ride 'would bring traffic chaos' to Eastleigh, say residents

RESIDENTS are threatening to blockade a Hampshire road if plans to build a park and ride at the end of their street go ahead.

They told of their shock after learning of the proposal to turn a yard at the end of Dutton Lane, in Eastleigh, into a 149-space car park.

From here people could park their vehicles and take shuttle buses to the town centre, Southampton Airport and the train station.

If the site ran to full capacity it could mean an extra 258 vehicle movements every day.

Residents fear traffic chaos and warn it is “an accident waiting to happen” in an area where families live.

But the landowner said the plans had been well thought out and he was keen to work with residents to make it a success.

Plans for The Yard, at Withy Meadows, in Dutton Lane, also include a bus shelter and kiosk.

Under the plans, submitted to Eastleigh Borough Council by landowner Kevin Bell, a 16-seater mini bus is proposed to run between the site and Bishopstoke Road every ten minutes at peak times, 8am to 9am and 5pm to 6pm, and then every 20 minutes from 7.30am to 10am and 4pm to 7pm.

Beyond this there would likely be an on demand service for airport and rail users.

Customers would be airport passengers, people who commute to work from Eastleigh train station and town centre workers.

Resident Jayne Philpott, 29, a police administration clerk, is concerned about added noise and the lack of passing places on the dead end road, which is a single lane with cars parked on either side.

The mum-of-two said: “It’s just going to be horrendous. I’m annoyed because we live in a residential street for a reason.”

Mum-of-two Yvonne Mercer, 44, said she was “shocked and surprised”

that it was even being considered because the road was not designed for it.

“The extra volume of traffic increases the risk of a child getting hurt,” she added.

Mr Bell said that he understood residents’ concerns, but had consulted with specialists and worked closely with the council.

He said the two businesses currently on site would go – reducing the number of vehicles – and that buses would only run on a supply and demand basis, helping to reduce congestion in Eastleigh.

He said there would be a steady stream rather than a rush at peak times and he had no plans to run a service at night.

The consultation deadline is July 30.

Not sure it's the best place for it - nearer the motorway would be more sensible.

Who is going to drive down Dutton Lane to wait for a mini bus when in less distance they can be over the bridge and where they need to be, especially if they've crawled down Bishopstoke Road and will merely rejoin the queue in the bus. Unlikely to get permission and if it did, destined to fail.

Eastleigh doesn't really need a park and ride, it needs cheaper buses in and out of the town to C/Ford, Fair Oak and West End etc.

If one is actually needed I would have thought the old garden center opposite the rugby club would have been better or perhaps the other side (AC Delco etc).

The junction with Dutton Lane is a nightmare as it is.

A tweet from Keith house in a conversation we had about parking after the news M & S wanted to build a store next to lidle. Coincidence?

@Dan4eastleigh @dailyecho We are looking for more parking on industrial sites very close to the town centre for long-stay parking.

Oh yes, good usage of the 'risk a child could get hurt' card. Well played. Now I just need someone to mention NIMBY and someone else to call the place 'Beastleigh'. Come on, come on.

does seem like a strange place to put it. If it for park and ride then nearer the motorway would make more sense. And good luck getting the network rail guys to give way for the regular mini bus, I own a property in Dutton lane, and when there is a shift change in the railway the bus will find it difficult to get down the lane.

Some people have nothing better to do than kick up a fuss . Im pretty sure theres a small park and ride on the road . No one can start a business these days without people jumping on the band wagon . Im sure the council workers have no where to park and also workers of eastleigh . Its not just for the airport . Good luck to them

I always thought park & ride car parks were outside of town centres!!. What exactly is the point of a park & ride service this close to the town centre?. With the traffic on Bishopstoke Road it would be quicker to walk from Dutton Lane to the town lol !.

Yes exactly,it will solve nothing.Seems to be simply a money making project for someone.
Its right that P&R should situated away from the towns they are intended to serve,Winchester's are far better located, and its about time Southampton got going with one too.
They are a very good idea, but not here where it is being proposed, its ridiculous, and its certainly not being done for any altruistic reasons, that's for sure.

What children play down this road if it's already dangerous you should be thinking about your parenting skills not a park and ride. But in all honesty it's not dangerous I ride my bike down this road daily and have never seen children or had any problems from the skip lorry's that don't speed. This is just people with nothing better to do with their time.
