Students at a Hampshire school have won the St John Ambulance National Schools First Aid Competition.

Teenagers were tested on their skills as first aiders in realistic emergency scenarios – and Wykeham House School, in Fareham, came out on top.

Teams of students from junior and secondary schools were put through their paces as judges assessed their knowledge, communication, initiative, teamwork and confidence.

Hundreds of UK schools took part but the students from Wykeham House were chosen for their skills when dealing with scenarios like an unconscious casualty, severe bleeds and burns.

The winning team members were Samantha Cooper, 14, Jodie Ballard, 13, Emily Clubley, 13, Esme McKeown, 15 and Abbie Winnicott, 13.

Wendy Human, from St John Ambulance, presented the school with £1,000 to be used on equipment and facilities, and each member of the winning team also received an individual prize.

Samantha Cooper said: “I am so proud of us all. Everyone should know how to save a life – it’s the most important thing you could ever do.”
