EXTRA patrols are under way as police step up their hunt for arsonists after a string of attacks in a Southampton community.

Detectives investigating a fire which spread through two ground-floor flats in Bitterne are still looking into the possibility that the blaze was linked to a van fire just a few miles away.

As previously reported, the flats blaze in Hood Road and van fire in nearby Edelvale Road happened in the early hours of Sunday.

No arrests have been made yet, but Safer Neighbourhood Teams are making extra patrols to offer reassurance to residents in the area.

Officers also want to speak to anyone who may have been in the area between 2.30am and 3.30am on July 20.

Anyone with information should call Bitterne CID on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 111 555.
