DEMONSTRATORS against the conflict in Gaza have take to the streets of Southampton city centre this afternoon – as the Palestine death toll reaches 900.

Waving placards demanding an end to the violence, the protesters gathered in East Park before marching to the BBC studios in Havelock Road.

Daily Echo:

Chanting slogans, they gathered with the aim of drawing attention to the plight of civilians in Gaza and to call for an end to the bombing by Israel.

Before they did this the names of children killed in the recent bombing raids were read out in a ceremony near the peace fountain.

This had been due to happened at the city’s Cenotaph but a rival demonstration by around 20 members of the far-right English Defence League (EDL) chanting pro-Israeli slogans and waving Star of David flags forced the protesters to move from Watts Park across Above Bar Street.

The march was organised by the Grass Roots Muslim Movement and supported by Students for Palestine, although people attending came from across the community.

Speaking ahead of the march, protest organiser Abdullah Cattel, from the Grass Roots Muslim Movement, said: "What's happening in Gaza has escalated and we feel it's one of the greatest humanitarian causes in our age. It has been for a long time but the current bombardment of Gaza has made it come out into public again.

"We thought this was the best time to make a concerted effort to bring the situation of Gaza to an end. We are hoping we can unite everyone behind the cause."

It came as the death toll in Gaza reached 985 after 85 bodies were pulled from rubble during a 12-hour truce.

Daily Echo:

Thirty-nine Israelis have died.

Israel launched its military offensive on July 8, on the grounds of stopping Hamas firing rockets at them.

How deluded are the Marxists muppets supporting the terrorist group Hamas? Peace, love and jihad? Yeah right. And to label English patriots who stopped the desecration of the Cenotaph AND who showed their solidarity with the State of Israel as "Far Right" is farcical journalism. What parallel universe are you on Comrade Knox? Perhaps he should read the Hamas charter before using this clearly baseless insult. Anyone for sexism, anti-Semitism and Homophobia? What will it take before you wake up to the real fascist threat to this country? Another Lee Rigby? Another 7/7? Or is this all part of the great proletarian revolution you yearn for?

Hamas is a terrorist organisation. The people of Gaza voted for them. If Hamas had not fired rockets at Israel trying to kill innocent children then NO ONE IN GAZA WOULD HAVE DIED. What is it about this very very simple fact that these morons do not understand. Pi55 off to Gaza and protest there. Try to stop the terrorists putting their rocket launchers yards from families on purpose so they can generate the images you see on TV.. Only the gullible accept the manipulation of the truth. The situation in the Middle East has been prevalent for over two thousand years. It will prevail for another two thousand. What on earth these clowns are trying to achieve is beyond belief. It is bad enough out there. Stop encouraging violence here. If these people feel they need to highlight the issues then clear off over there and protest. There is no reason (excepting encouraging violence) to demonstrate here. I understand free speech et. al. but there is no place in our society for this.

Doesnt matter how much the astroturfers protest on here - the fact is Gaza is being flattened. Innocent people are being killed. Red herrings about "lefities" and "terrorists" are besides the point. Former government ministers even acknowledge this is a war crime as the response levied was WAY out of proportion.

Israel has constantly flouted UN rules on encampments and settlements. It has broken the Geneva Convention. If Israel TRULY wants to fight terrorism it can do this by supporting the Palestinian people with educational programs, trade agreements (instead of trying to build walls around them and close them off from the rest of the world).

Also claiming that "they've always fought in that region" is also wrong. Israel only came about as a response to the Nazis. It was supposed to be a safehaven. Many Israeli people are new to the region, they came LONG after the Crusades, the Ottoman situation and the British Empire.

You have to remember that many Jewish people around the world object to Israels approach. Israeli reservist military people have even written an open letter in protest at the war.

The EDL are no different to the Hitler whispers in days leading up to Hitler coming to power, Israel are not a Left Wing Country it is an extreme right wing country just like the EDL are.
The EDL are separatists they turn up at memorials like the one for Lee Rigby with there St George Cross and this is upsetting to familys that have lost family and friends though acts of war and terrorism while serving in the Arm Forces, These people that join the arm forces do not serve under the Union Flag and not a Separatist flag of the st george cross.

Reading the comments on this thread leads me to two possible conclusions regarding the population of Southampton:-

1. The majority commenting and voting have no knowledge of the historical causes of the problem.
2. The majority of the population commenting here are Muslims.

The Israelis got out of Gaza, taking their settlers with them. The people of Gaza then elected a terrorist organisation to run their new country.

They were the beneficiaries of billions of dollars, to set up a State infrastructure. Gaza has a lovely coastline, and with international help (which was offered) could have traded with Egypt and Israel, and become wealthy from tourism.

Instead, the new 'government' started firing rockets at Israel.

Well, what would you expect David Cameron to do, if (hypothetically) the Peoples' Republic of the Isle of Wight started shelling our city of Southampton? And what would you all think of me if I supported them in their violence?

Please, people, try to be less tribal, and more open minded. It takes two to tango, and to blame one side entirely is misguided and unfair (just because one side share your religion?).

You missing out when the UN resolution told Israel to pull out of the Gaza strip (remember back in 1947 Gaza boarders went right across to Jordan land that now controlled by Israel) At the Same time Israel pulled out of the Gaza Strip they mounted a blockade stopping all ships bring food and medical supplys, they also stop road transport doing the same, they control the air space over the Gaza to stop air craft from getting in, actions the Israel is still doing today, not so long ago they boarded an Italian relief ship throwing food and medical supplys overboard and turned the ship back.

Your point 1 isnt backed up by your own "historical" account further in the comment.

As for point 2 - I'm white, working class, ex-protestant CoE now atheist, never been rich. Never been to uni... But I know how to at least read a blinking history book. I know how to use social media to contact/reference those in the know including Gaza or Israeli citizens and the worlds journalists.

Astroturfing conspiracy theorists (ACTs) like yourself wont save Gaza. You'd merely prolong issues if you ever had any influence, and thankfully you have little.

ACTs like yourself like to try and make out its black and white, that they're the victim in someway, and when they lose the argument they resort to accusing people of siding with terrorists. Hyperbole.

When the Islamists of Hamas mass slaughter people, the left wing and media stay silent and no street protests. When the Islamists of ISIS mass slaughter people, the left wing and media.stay silent and no street protests. When the Islamists of Boko Haram mass slaughter Christians, the left wing and media stay silent and again no street protests. Anyone see a pattern here? Seems when a Muslim/Islamist organisation commits an atrocity, the Left and media consider it justifiable. Reality50

It takes two to tango, and to blame one side entirely is misguided and unfair (just because one side share your religion?).
your recount of the history seems very vague and cleverly worded to make it seem as though Palestinians came and overtook them. Jews were being persecuted during the war and this is the reason they left, out of no choice of their own. empty, the new Palestinian settlers had to elect a government to run this empty land. It became Palestine. Fairly. Palestine made a treaty with Britain to be owned by them and hence protected. Europe, unwilling to home the Jews, decided to put them back in now Palestine. Palestine was split in half and villages were burned, people massacred and forced into other areas of the country. This is not the peaceful Jewish Israelis the people remembered. Now is it any wonder why the people of Palestine were angry? There last cornered resort being to fire rockets. We think because of media, Hamas initiated it all, but actually Israel burned their homes and massacred many people it left Palestine with no choice. But no we didn't know about this because the media doesnt report it. I understand if you wish to stand by your people. I wouldn't criticise you for it. but you are wrong in saying we support it simply because we share religion. we made a point on our march to say we fight for justice. if it were the muslims massacring the jews, we would stand by the jews. In the Quran it tells us to avoid any form of bias and stay true to justice. Same in the Torah and that is why we have seen many amazing jewish marches in aid of Gaza. Are you not curious as to why men of Jewish religion are stating that the happenings in Gaza are wrong and Israel is forming a terrorist state. Yet you do not see any muslims supporting Israel. We would if it were justified. Trust me, it is not a biased protest.
