FIREFIGHTERS spent 15 hours battling a blaze at a landfill site.

Crews were called to Blue Haze, near Ringwood, just after 3am on Saturday after two acres of rubbish caught alight.

About 35 firefighters from Hampshire and Dorset were involved in tackling the blaze, which was only extinguished fully at 6pm on Saturday.

Five fire engines and two support vehicles were on the scene, off the B3081 between Ringwood and Verwood, for most of the day.

A spokesman from Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said that smoke, which was visible in the local area for several hours while the fire was burning, was not believed to have presented any threat to health.

He added: “However, members of the public in the area should be aware of the possible effects of smoke, particularly on the elderly, young and those with existing medical conditions such as asthma.”
