THOUSANDS of bees who set up home at Southampton Docks will be buzzing off this weekend – and emigrating to Wales.

As previously reported by the Daily Echo, three hives were built in the huge dockside cranes and giant straddle carriers that move the large container boxes around at DP World’s container terminal.

Staff there warmly welcomed their new guests – even tucking in to fresh local honey on their toast every morning.

But now the colony of 40,000 bees are in need of a more suitable home and they’re on the move to Anglesey in north Wales this weekend.

The terminal’s safety and security manager and part-time bee keeper Pete Terry will transport the special delivery.

Pete said: “The bees have taken very well to their temporary home, having been removed from one of our straddle carriers, and we will be sad to see them go.

“There are a couple of thousand bees currently in this little hive, luckily they have a nice temperament which has made the re-homing process easier.”
