SHE has devoted her time to supporting people with mental health problems – with a musical twist.
At 70 years old, Jan Langan is still working hard to help people in her community and is at the centre of a support scheme challenging the stigma which surrounds mental health.
Fondly called Ma Langan by the people she helps, Jan from Eastleigh is a volunteer for Tonic Music for Mental Health which aids the recovery of those struggling with mental health conditions through music.
Now her daughter Steph Langan, who helped start up Tonic Music two years ago, has nominated her mother for the Daily Echo’s Community Stars award.
Jan is always willing to help and is passionate about raising money for the people that she believes are overlooked and need support and care.
Alongside her daughter, Jan is fundraising hard to support the music gigs and events which are created to boost confidence and lift spirits.
She travels across the county holding raffles, fundraisers, tombolas and helping at the workshops and art groups for mental health patients. Jan encourages them to talk, draw, sing or play an instrument to let go of their stress.
Steph said: “She is the most outgoing, energetic, likeable, and kind person I know, we couldn’t do without her. Mum has become a very popular community figure. She has time for everyone and always listens as people talk to her about their life and experiences.”
Jan added: “I just love feeling like I am really giving them something that helps, we have so many people that come to us who hadn’t even been able to walk out of their front door and after a workshop they have the courage to get up on stage and perform – it’s so inspiring.”
The Community Stars campaign, in association with Aster, will run until Friday, August 22, when Daily Echo editor-in-chief Ian Murray, Aster's regional director Jean Dalziel and their customer board member John Cockaday will choose the winners.
First place will receive £500 and £250 to a charity of their choice, second place will be given £250 and £100 to charity, then six highly commended nominations will be given £100 and £50 to charity.
A community star can be any member of the public who goes above and beyond to serve their community.
