POLICE are treating a car fire in which a woman and two young children suffered severe injuries as attempted murder.

Hampshire Constabulary confirmed today that detectives are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire in Merdon Castle Lane, Hursley, on Monday evening.

As reported, a 37-year-old woman and her two children, a six-year-old girl and a five-year-old boy, all from Southampton, were rescued from the fire and taken to hospital.

The boy is being treated for life-threatening injuries and the woman and girl are currently in a serious condition.

Det insp Simon Baker, from the Hampshire Major Investigation Team, said: “This is an extremely distressing incident for everyone involved. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of those who have been seriously injured and specially trained officers are continuing to support them at this difficult time.

“This is now being treated as an attempted murder investigation. Our priority is to establish how this fire started. We are keeping an open mind and considering all the options at this stage including whether the fire was started deliberately.

“We also have to take into consideration that the people involved are all being treated in hospital and we have to balance our investigation with their medical needs, so establishing the full circumstances of what has happened may take some time.

“Our enquiries so far indicate that this was not a random incident and we are satisfied that we have identified all of those involved in the investigation.

“Road closures have now been lifted at the scene of the fire and we would like to thank members of the public for their patience and understanding.”

Perhaps you should share your 'knowledge' of this incident with the police as you clearly have 'information' ....... Or are you just being a fool that assumes everything reported in the DE is all the facts of the case with nothing left out?

The most poignant comment I heard from this story was from the man who tried to pull the boy out of the car. He was crying out daddy. Now he is fighting for his life in hospital. To think anybody could deliberately try and kill people in such a way especially 2 small children is beyond belief for most of us. But sadly from previous news stories we know that things like this happen. Let the police do their job is all I would ask here. Obviously they and the fire service have found something not quite right with the incident on Tuesday which has led them to question if it was attempted murder. Think it would be wrong to speculate further. Thoughts meanwhile are with the 5 year old boy fighting for his life in hospital.

If a fire starts "naturally" it'll be quite slow and (obviously) in the engine compartment. Flares will happen, even with "honeycomb" fuel tanks, but that should be well after all are clear. An explosion of this nature spontaneously, unless the car was pre-war, is highly unlikely.

Your probably right, but in reality this is a story about an attempted murder everyone is just speculating who the alleged murder might be. I think we need to put the victims to one side, they have another story to share our sympathy with.

I think the fact that the police are satisfied they have identified everyone involved and they were in the middle of nowhere speaks massive volumes. If they were in the middle of southampton, there might of been someone else involved.

Or do we presume one of the hurls residents are child killing arsonists.

I do hope the kids pull through. The mum should of pulled the boy out though instead of leaving it for a brave stranger. Most parents would of sacrifice themselves getting the kids out of the car, and as the bloke just opened the door, something he mum could of dealt with even if she was on fire. She knew the kid was in there.

I'm just expressing my thoughts and opinions on an open discussion board, I don't claim to know any real facts just those that I read in the article.

And sorry I'm not picking on you just trying to help you understand why we can discuss on here.

As always you will always get one or two comments that go to far, I also notice that you say poor children, father and grandparents but not mother. You obviously have your view but didn't want to say it.

Sometimes someone's free speech may offend someone else, that's part of free speech and that should never be sensored
No I do not have a view with the regard to the mother and I apologise that I omitted to mention her in the previous comment, maybe she was unable to rescue the boy as she was frozen in sheer shock, something that is probable as I know from experience when faced with a trauma involving a loved one, people react in different ways.
