A man has died after being hit by BT Openreach a van at the junctions of Spencer Road and Ashley Road in New Milton

A white BT Openreach Vauxhall van collided with the pedestrian at the junctions of Spencer Road and Ashley Road in New Milton this morning.

The incident happened shortly after 10.30am and road closures were put in place at both roads.

Police, South Central Ambulance Service Ambulance, and South West Ambulance Service, were sent to the scene.

The roads will be closed for the next few hours while crash scene investigators carry out investigations.

A spokesman for South Central Ambulance Service said: "We were called to reports of a road traffic collision involving a male pedestrian in Spencer Road, New Milton.

"We sent a rapid response vehicle to the scene.

"Sadly one male was confirmed deceased at the scene."

Sergeant Darren Ord, of the serious collision investigation unit, Eastleigh, said: "Spencer Road has been closed following an incident which has sadly resulted in a man dying.

"We have been making door-to-door inquiries and anybody who saw anything should contact me.

"We are currently interviewing the driver at the police station."

A resident of Spencer Road, who did not want to be named, said: "It's a very busy road and I am surprised there have not been more accidents.

"There is a lot of double parking and you have to tip-toe out into the road when you're crossing "It is so sad to hear someone has died."

Another resident, who also did not want to be named, said he saw police cars on the road and rushed outside to see what was going on.

"They asked me if I could go back inside," he added.

"Then fire crews arrived and they used a jack to lift the van so they could retrieve the man from under it."

A spokesperson for BT Openreach said: "As you would expect we are taking this tragic incident very seriously and are carrying out a full investigation."
