TT was a washout for one of Hampshire's biggest carnivals today as heavy rain spoiled play.

Brockenhurst Carnival organisers were forced to drastically scale down celebrations as torrential rain swamped the village.

Three of the main floats by the Women's Institute First Choice Taxi and the Harvey family pulled out, while organised falconry and bellydancing displays to be held at Brockenhurst College were called off due to the weather.

It came just days after a helicopter there was also cancelled due to engine failure.

But participants still braved the rain, with a walking parade winding its way through the village led by the Hampshire Caledonian Pipe Band.

Carnival Princess Eleanor Rajakaruna arrived with her attendant Ellie Beckett, seven, in a Rolls Royce, while carnival prince Caspar Bradley, six, looked dapper pulling up in a vintage Jaguar.

Some villagers came out to support it but far less than the thousands last year.

Highlights included parade members dressed as Daleks and characters from the Wizard of Oz dubbing themselves as Follow the Yellow Brock Road.

The event, organised by the Lions Club of Lymington and Brockenhurst raised for than £500 for charity.

Organiser Ian Duncan said: “The weather has been a bit of a shame.

“But thanks to those who crtaved the weather - there was a great spirit while marching and the costumes looked great.”
