FIFTY people were evacuated after a fire at a Hampshire cathedral today
Four engines were called in this afternoon to Winchester Cathedral to tackle an electrical fire after smoke was smelt inside the medieval church.
Jerry Leonard, group manager at the scene, said a fire caused by a malfunctioning light was found near the Lady Chapel in the cathedral's East Transit at around 3.50pm.
He said: "We located the fire, which involved an overheated light fitting which has now been made safe.
"We will be winding the job down very soon."
John Bennion, 79, was taking photographs in the cathedral when the alarm sounded at around 3pm.
"We were right at the top end and the fire alarm started, and we were told ushered to get out.
"The attendants told us to clear the area.
"The ushers said 'make your way to the west end and get on the grass.'"
