RESIDENTS are calling for action after a spate of accidents on their road that has them fearing it is only a matter of time before someone is killed.

Their calls come after yet another crash on the road involving two cyclists – one a schoolboy – which brought rush hour traffic to a standstill yesterday.

Witnesses told how residents and drivers who had stopped in front of the collision went to help the two cyclists, who were flung from their cycles and left lying in the road.

One of them was a man in his 20s who was taken to hospital for treatment to a head injury while the other, a 13-year-old boy, was treated at the scene for what residents said was a severe nose bleed.

The incident, on Eastleigh Road, Fair Oak, happened shortly before 8.30am and led to long tailbacks in the area.

The boy, a pupil at Wyvern Technology College, was sent home for the day, according to head teacher Alan Newton. He told the Daily Echo: “I am very pleased to say that everybody is okay, there’s just a bit of a bloody nose but our student has been sent home.

“Luckily when the accident happened the traffic was stopped by a red traffic light and paramedics could come and make sure everyone was safe.”

But many residents highlighted concerns about the safety of the road, saying more needed to be done to stop speeding, deter lorries from using it as a rat run to the motorway and encourage children to use pedestrian crossings.

Percy Rogers, 77, said he has counted 68 accidents on the road since it was built in the mid-1960s.

Mother-of-four Anna Seagrave, 40, who has lived on the road for the last 10 years, says it has got worse.

“It’s frightening,” she said, pointing out there were three schools in close proximity.

“Someone is going to get killed, someone is going to lose their child.”

Husband Danny, 51, said: “It’s about prevention. All we’re trying to do is prevent something happening, we can foresee it’s going to. It’s just a matter of time.”

Residents are calling for a number of measures from speed bumps, increased signage, a flashing speed warning sign, lowering the speed to 20mph or a speed camera.

They say they have raised the issue many times in the past with the authorities, but very little had been done.
