A HAMPSHIRE community hall is set to cut its running costs and carbon footprint as work begins on roof repairs.

The £81,000 improvements to Winnall Community Centre, Winchester, includes insulation, new piping and waterproof roof layers.

Winnall Community Association started raising cash for the roof after emergency repairs failed to stop rainwater from leaking during events.

The association reached its cash target in July after Veolia Environmental Trust donated £63,005 through the Landfill Communities Fund. It also received grants of £12,500 from Hampshire County Council and £4,500 from Winchester City Council.

Development co-ordinator Janet Berry said: “The project will ensure that the centre can continue to operate and provide a warm, safe and comfortable environment in which all members of the community can attend and enjoy educational, recreational and leisure activities.

“The project will also lower the building’s running costs, ensuring the centre’s sustainability.”

The association is seeking further funds to upgrade heating, insulation and water management in the hall.
