FIRE broke out a Southampton factory after lightning struck the roof.

Firefighters attended a small roof fire in an industrial building in Hazel Road, Itchen, as a result of a lightning strike in the early hours of today.

The alarm was raised at around 2:07am after lightning struck the 50 by 100 metre building.

Crews requested the attendance of the aerial ladder platform to gain an external assessment of the roof.

Firefighters used two breathing apparatus and one hose reel to put the fire out.

A total of 11 firefighters attended the incident, including a fire service manager officer.
