CIVIC chiefs in Southampton have pledged spending‎ £40million to fix the city's residential roads.

Labour council leader Simon Letts says the authority will spend £4million every year for the next decade to permanently resurface roads across the city.

He says the state of roads, many of which are in a poor condition and littered with potholes,‎ is one of the major issues residents complain to the council about.

He also added that if the money was not spent, 80 per cent of the city's roads would be in poor condition, or at risk of it in ten years' time.

He said: "this is a long term fix rather than a short term one.

"Instead of fixing roads many times to temporarily mend potholes we will fix them once which will last for a long time.

"The roads impact on everybody, whether you are a bus user, a cyclist or a motorist - everybody will get the benefit."

The cash to pay for the spending spree will  be raised by selling off buildings the city council no longer needs.

The initiative comes after the Daily Echo highlighted two Southampton roads where residents said potholes were blighting their lives.

After our stories, the city council agreed to work on Coxford Road in Lordswood and Bellemoor Road in Shirley.
