FROM talking computer software to high tech magnifiers - the latest gadgets for blind and partially sighted people were on display at the biennial Solent Sight Day.

Around 400 people attended the free event organised by charity Southampton Sight at the O2 Guildhall Southampton which was opened by former Home Secretary MP David Blunkett, who has been blind since birth.

The politician was joined at the event by CEO of the Royal National Institute for the Blind Lesley-Anne Alexander CBE who both gave a speech.

The venue was filled with stalls of products, information and advice from organisations including Age UK Southampton, Guide Dogs, and audio newspaper Southampton Area Talking Echo.

CEO of Southampton Sight Jeff Page said: “We organised the event to promote what's available to blind and partially sighted people in the Solent area and to get the word out that there are lots of services available to them.“People shouldn't feel alone in the early stages of an eye condition. They can always get in touch with us or other charities or the local authorities and ask for advice.

“There's a world of information, guidance and support for people diagnosed with sight loss.”
