Virgin boss Richard Branson has launched a search for a new class of long-haul pilots – and the meteoric rise to a dream career will start at a Hampshire training centre.

The 18-month programme will allow cadets to become the first in Europe to train as pilots even with no previous flying experience.

But the course, which will involve part training at CTC Aviation’s high-tech simulation training centre in Nursling, Southampton, will set you back £110,000.

Loans are available for cadets, and those who keep their nerve and complete the course can reclaim the money at the end.

Rookies will spend six months getting to grips with the Southampton centre’s flight deck simulator.

Echo reporter Rebecca Person previously took to its controls for a taster session in August last year.

After that they will get in the cockpit for real, training in Phoenix, USA, before returning to complete the course.

Successful graduates will immediately fly as a long-haul co-pilot operating the iconic Airbus A330-300.

The race is on to hire 12 applicants to begin in May next year and Virgin’s flight operations general manager David Kistruck said: “Our people have always been at the heart of Virgin Atlantic and we’re delighted to offer this opportunity to a whole new generation of flyers.

“They’ll be part of the Virgin family from day one and will enjoy an opportunity like no other.”

Applicants must be over 18 and have a minimum of five GCSEs or equivalent including maths, science and English.
