COUNCILLORS have been urged to reject plans to allow a funfair to use land in Hampshire as a permanent base.

Charles Cole Amusement Caterer applied to use land between Shop Lane and Bursledon Road, Southampton, as storage space for vehicles, caravans and equipment.

The operator says the land would be used to house a maximum of 12 residential caravans, four rides, ten lorries and seven smaller vehicles when the fair is not on tour.

Separate applications have gone to both Southampton City Council and Eastleigh Borough Council, but 28 objections have been made by surrounding residents.

They say the plans could increase the likelihood of an accident at the site and lead to more traffic, noise and disturbance.

And city council officers have concerns over plans to build on a “visually important” area on the outskirts of the city, and the potential “detrimental impact on the visual character and amenity of the strategic gap” between Southampton and the countryside.

City councillors will dicsuss the plans at a meeting today.
