THIS CCTV image captures the moment a violent brawl escalated on a train waiting at Southampton Central railway station.

A member of staff suffered a broken nose and a passenger was injured after a terrifying mass brawl broke out on the train.

Southampton Crown Court heard how violence escalated between four men on board the Romsey shuttle service as it waited at Southampton Central railway station.

At an earlier hearing the court heard how the men’s rowdy and abusive behaviour came to the attention of a guard on board, who left the train to seek assistance.

The men then began fighting among themselves, the court heard.

Punches were thrown and the group then left the train but the court heard how Leon Hine, 20, one of the men involved in the incident, brandished an empty bottle on the platform.

The rest of the group got back on the train, while Hine threatened them from outside.

Several members of staff intervened to try and calm the situation, and were injured in the fracas, which happened shortly after 11pm on May 12 this year.

Daily Echo:

Hine (above), 20, of Tadburn Green, Banning Street, Romsey, was jailed for 15 months for affray and six months for endangering safety, to be served concurrently.

Alex Leigh, 20, of Withy Close, Romsey, was jailed for 12 months for affray.

Liam Sherred-Ball, 21, of Partridge Way, Salisbury, was sentenced to 12 months in prison suspended for two years. He was also ordered to undertake 200 hours of unpaid work.

Jake Mellor 21, of Duttons Road, Romsey, was sentenced to 12 months in prison, suspended for two years. He was also ordered to undertake 200 hours of unpaid work.

They were sentenced at Southampton Crown Court.

British Transport Police and officers from Hampshire Constabulary arrived, arresting Leigh, Sherred-Ball and Mellor on the train.

Hine was arrested shortly afterwards as he had run onto the track.

Speaking after the men were sentenced, Det Con Phil James said: “The level of violence during this incident was appalling.

“Several members of staff were threatened, and one had his nose broken during the affray.

“A member of the public who attempted to calm the situation was also injured, and other passengers on the train were left feeling threatened and scared by the situation.

“We will not accept any form of violence on the rail network, and I would like to pay tribute to the members of rail staff who bravely tried to intervene in the incident, as well as the police officers who worked so hard to bring the offenders to justice.”
