PUPILS at a Hampshire school may have fallen ill with sickness and diarrhoea after eating raw runner beans on a trip, an investigation has found.

As previously reported, children from Romsey Primary School fell ill after visiting the Broadlands Estate.

A total of 39 pupils were struck down with vomiting and diarrhoea, sparking an investigation by Public Health England (PHE) to find the source.

As a result of their investigations, PHE has concluded that the most likely cause of the outbreak of gastroenteritis was eating raw runner beans, which formed part of the activities at the organic farm on the site.

Dr Anand Fernandes, consultant in communicable disease control in the Wessex PHE Centre, said: “Although reports of illness following consumption of raw runner beans were very rare, the beans should always be washed and cooked before consumption.”
