AS THE title and cast of the latest Bond film are announced, we look back at the top ten deadly villains the secret agent has faced in his 23 previous outings.
1. Ernst Stavro Blofeld - Bond’s all-time nemesis, the archetypal criminal mastermind has appeared six times over the decades – and there are rumours he could be set for a return.
2. Jaws – the giant, metal-mouthed henchman was possibly the most popular-ever villain, and one of the few baddies to survive his encounters with Bond, featuring in both The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker.
3. Oddjob – another favourite among moviegoers, the diminutive Goldfinger henchman was famous for taking care of people by the use of his lethal bowler hat.
4. Auric Goldfinger – Oddjob’s boss, the maniacal tycoon has perhaps the best-ever line by a villain. When Bond, strapped to a table with a laser headed for him asks “Do you expect me to talk?” he replies “No Mr Bond, I expect you to die.”
5. Dr No – Bond’s first-ever on-screen rival, the scientist with metal hands is also a member of Blofeld’s crime syndicate SPECTRE.
6. Francisco Scaramanga – Bond almost met his match in Christopher Lee’s assassin Scaramanga in The Man With the Golden Gun.
7. Max Zorin – The psychopathic businessman, played by Christopher Walken in A View To A Kill, hatched a plan to destroy Silicon Valley in the USA.
8. Alec Trevelyan – Bond’s nemesis in Goldeneye is his old friend and former MI6 agent Trevelyan, who swears revenge after Bond leaves him to be captured during a mission.
9. May Day – Zorin’s right hand woman in A View To A Kill, not only does she possess supreme athleticism but she also has unnatural strength.
10. Raoul Silva – Javier Bardem brought more than a touch of menace to the role of former MI6 operative-turned-cyber terrorist Silva in last Bond outing Skyfall.
