A TRESPASSER has caused delays and cancellations for travellers at Southampton Central station this afternoon.

Electric railway lines between Redbridge and Southampton Airport Parkway were turned off while police cleared the scene to the east of the station.

A spokesman for British Transport Police said officers were called to the eastern end of the station at 2.50pm after a train driver reported that a 26-year-old woman had suffered injuries and was on the track.

The woman, who is from Southampton, was taken to Southampton General Hospital for treatment to pelvic injuries.

The incident caused massive delays for rail commuters, with services resuming after 5pm, but with heavy delays and alterations.

The line closures meant no trains were going in or out of Southampton, with disruption on the line between Southampton Central and Portsmouth as well.

A BTP spokesman said: "Our officers were called to the line near Southampton Central station shortly before 3pm on Saturday, 6 December, after a train driver reported seeing a person on the track.

"Colleagues from South Central Ambulance Service also attended, and a 26-year-old woman from Southampton was helped from the line and taken to hospital. She was not hit by a train.

"We are not treating the incident at suspicious."
