POLICE are hunting thieves who are targeting work vans across Hampshire, stealing expensive power tools.

Within just one night, officers received 22 reports of thefts from work vans in a spate of thefts that spanned across the county, including Sholing, Bitterne, Weston, Shirley and Hedge End.

Police are now urging van owners to protect their vans and where possible, not leave high value equipment inside.

The string of thefts happened overnight on December 9 and December 10.

Inspector Alex Reading from the Southampton East Neighbourhood Policing team said: “Thieves have been targeting work vans with valuable power tools inside.”

He added that work vans could be better protected by following a few simple steps. These are: Park your vehicle in a secure area (in a garage or behind locked gates, if possible).

If you do not have a secure parking place, park in a well-lit street in easy view of your own or neighbours' houses.

When visiting businesses, try to park close to the entrance and preferably in the view of CCTV.

Ensure all windows and doors are properly secured when left unattended.

Where possible, remove valuable items from the vehicle overnight and store them in a secure place.

Do not leave tools or equipment on view inside the vehicle.

Consider fitting an appropriate alarm system, protecting the cabin and load areas.

Apply a security marking product to power tools and equipment (further details of the various methods are available on request).

Alternatively, etch or emboss identifiable marks to these items.

Consider installing secure storage containers or lockers in the van to store the tools in.

Ensure that the van doors are securely lockable and consider having suitable deadlocks installed.

Make sure to physically check that the van doors and windows are locked if you have used the remote to lock the vehicle, even if the feedback indicates the van has locked.

If you see anyone acting suspiciously around work vans or you have any information about those responsible for these incidents please call 101.
