A HIGH profile Saints star was landed with a £600 fine for speeding - but didn't know a thing about it for two years, a court heard.

Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin only discovered he had acquired six points on his license when he contacted the DVLA for another matter.

Basingstoke Magistrates Court heard how in a bizarre twist the 25-year-old had even paid the fine, mistakenly thinking it was connected to a finance agreement on his car.

The court was told that Schneiderlin was unaware his car was caught on camera doing 46mph in a 40mph zone in Southampton.

Despite informing motoring authority DVLA of his new address, he claims he never received a notice informing him a camera on Mountbatten Way had caught his Audi speeding.

The court heard he was convicted in his absence of speeding and for failing to provide the driver details to the authorities - for which he received a £600 fine and six points.

But he only learnt of the conviction when he contacted the DVLA asking for a duplicate driving licence.

Cliff Morris, defending Schneiderlin, applied on his behalf to have the case reopened and said that the player, who wasn't in court, admitted speeding.

Mr Morris said: “In late November this year when he contacted the DVLA, they informed him he had a driving conviction. As soon as he heard this he contacted me.

“He had moved properties a couple of times and the paperwork never caught up with him.”

Mr Morris asked the court to reduce the fine and the points penalty, arguing the player “knew nothing about it” and was only six miles an hour over the limit.

Prosecutor Sarah Gondelle said the offence happened on September 11, 2012, and that the footballer had no other speeding convictions at the time of the offence.

Presiding magistrate Dr Kate Gregory reduced the penalty from six points to three and gave him a £60 fine, and ordered him to pay £15 victim surcharge and £85 court costs.

The court accepted there were “administrative issues” which led to Schneiderlin not being aware of the offence.
