POLICE have today named the driver who was killed when his car smashed into a tree in Hampshire.

Philip Waldron, from Dibden Purlieu, died at the scene of the crash, which happened on Buckler's Hard Road, in Beaulieu, at around 10am on Tuesday.

The 65-year-old was driving a grey Peugeot RCZ when it came off the road. He was trapped in the wreckage but was pronounced dead at the scene.

Part of the main Beaulieu to Buckler's Hard route was closed for several hours following the crash, which police have confirmed involved no other vehicles.

The circumstances of the collision are still being investigated. Anyone who saw what happened is urged to contact Sergeant Gabriel Snuggs, from the Eastleigh Serious Collision Investigation Unit, on 101 quoting Operation Sidra or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
