SCORES of patients were disrupted as Prime Minister David Cameron's visit to Hampshire caused “total chaos” at a GP surgery.

Hundreds of Conservative Party members and media from across the country descended on Bursledon as Mr Cameron gave his keynote speech at the community centre to the delight of the crowd.

But staff and patients at Bursledon Surgery, which is next door to the centre, were infuriated that they weren't warned that the event was planned.

All disabled spaces nearby were taken and one patient was forced to defy police and park in a prohibited zone to ensure she could make her appointment.

To add insult to injury the Mirror Chicken - a person in a life-size chicken suit designed to mock Mr Cameron for saying he would not appear in TV debates - was tipped off about the event.

Julie Howgate, practice manager at the surgery, said: “We didn't know anything about the visit for security reasons - it was total chaos.

“There was no space for an ambulance to get to the surgery and I feel that we were neglected and that if we had been told we could have changed our times to accommodate people.

“I did ask if Mr Cameron could pop in and see me but he declined.”

The area around the community centre was heavily congested before the event as party members parked cars up and down both sides of Portsmouth Road.

This meant that some patients were forced to turn around and leave their vehicles at home before returning on foot.

Ms Howgate said: “Some people had to walk half a mile to get to the surgery.

“It would have been hard enough if we were a business but we are providing a service and Monday morning is our busiest day.

“I thought he was supposed to promote GP access? It was bedlam.”

A Conservative Party spokesman said: “We apologise for any inconvenience caused to the surgery.”
