HUNDREDS of people from across Hampshire will be stopping to remember the millions of people who died in the Holocaust with two major events tomorrow.

Candles will be lit in Southampton and Winchester as people join millions across the world honouring those people who perished in the Holocaust as part of a worldwide memorial day.

Schoolchildren will join adults to perform music and theatrical pieces at Southampton Solent University’s Conference Centre in Above Bar Street as part of Holocaust Memorial Day.

Later in the evening there will be a silent vigil at Winchester Cathedral after an Imam and a Rabbi address a crowd of hundreds.

The day coincides with the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, the Nazi death camp in Poland.

The Reverend Professor June Boyce-Tillman is organising the event in Winchester. She said: “In the past, Space for Peace has proved inspirational for people. The peace procession is always particularly moving as the cathedral fills with light and sound.

“I am delighted that people find this vigil provides an event where respect and peace can be experienced through music in an incredibly beautiful space.”

The event in Above Bar begins at 6pm with the Mayor of Southampton, Cllr Sue Blatchford opening with a speech.

Sixth form students from Itchen College and South Downs College, Waterlooville will then light seven candles designed by award-winning artist Anish Kapoor.

Holocaust survivor Arieh Simonsohn, who was imprisoned in the Warsaw Ghetto during the Nazi occupation of Poland, will then speak during the opening of an exhibition by Southamp-ton Solent University students about the Holocaust.

The Univers-ity of Winchester is hosting the Space for Peace inter-faith event for the seventh consecutive year at Winchester Cathedral.

It will feature music on the theme of peace from a diverse range of |cultures performed by many groups including Winchester Community Choir, St Bede’s Catholic Primary School, Blue Sky, and Twyford St Mary’s Primary School.

Singers will perform from around the many chapels and corners of the cathedral, on request of the |audience.

The free event starts and ends with chants as arranged and conducted by Prof Boyce-Tillman.

The congregation will be free to move around the building, lighting candles, praying and participating in song from 7.15pm to 9pm.
