A RAIL worker suffered serious injuries after he got an electric shock at a Hampshire railway depot.

Emergency services were called to the Network Rail depot in Basingstoke to a contract member of staff who had been injured in what the British Transport Police described as a “work-related accident”.

The 50-year-old man was taken to hospital and treated for burns following the incident shortly after 4pm yesterday .

A British Transport Police spokesman said the Health and Safety Executive had been informed.

A Network Rail spokesman said: "A contractor working on Network Rail's new control centre in Basingstoke was injured yesterday afternoon while working on the site, managed by BAM Construction.

“He was taken to hospital with burns injuries following an electric shock and was discharged later that evening.

"An investigation will be carried out and the Health and Safety Executive has been informed. Our thoughts are with him and his family."

BAM Construction are yet to comment.
