THE Environment Agency says it believes no fuel leaked into a Hampshire nature reserve after a spillage on an industrial estate.

Almost 2,000 litres of fuel leaked out of a tanker on the Nursling Industrial Estate overnight.

Firefighters said they diverted most of it into tanks, but there fears some of it had leaked into the nearby Lower Test Marshes.

However Environment Agency officers have been at the site this morning and say they do not believe any fuel leaked into the marshes, although they are continuing to investigate the site.

A crew from the Redbridge fire station and the environmental protection team from Romsey were called to the Health Records Centre off Mauretania Road at 7.05pm last night.

They found the tanker almost empty, but managed to plug the leak and divert the fuel away from the nature reserve into tanks.

It is believed the tanker may have been damaged when another vehicle hit it, although the cause is still being investigated.

A spokesman for the EA said: "I can confirm that our officers have been unable to confirm any discharge off site and there is no evidence of any pollution to the adjacent watercourse.

"At this time we are satisfied that, as reported by the fire and rescue service, the quantity of oil which leaked from the tank, estimated to be between 1500 – 2000 litres, was contained within the site drainage system.

"Our teams are dealing with this routinely."
