Work to disinfect a farm with an outbreak of bird flu has been completed.

Defra has confirmed that the procedure at the farm concerned, in Upham, near Bishop’s Waltham, has been finished and the cull of around 10,000 birds to try to contain the outbreak came to an end on Friday.

After the outbreak was confirmed on February 2 a 1km exclusion zone was set up around Bigpath Farm – only the second place where bird flu has been confirmed in the UK since 2008.

A Defra spokeswoman said the exclusion zone remained in place and protocol meant it would stay for at least 21 days after disinfection was complete.

A football match between Upham and Four Marks at Upham Recreation Ground was postponed at the weekend because of the restrictions.

Following the outbreak three people, including a Defra official, underwent medical tests after showing signs of the illness, though these came back negative.
