With today being Ash Wednesday, we asked readers what they are giving up for Lent:

Ian Williams, 51, an electrician from Swaythling said: “I'm going to attempt to give up smoking, I've been trying on and off for a while so I'm using Lent as an excuse to really go for it.”

Jessica Buckley, 21, a charity fundraiser from Lordswood said: “Well last year I gave up chocolate and haven't had any since so seeing as that worked I'm going to try and quit smoking this time.”

Martine Miller, 49, a housewife from the New Forest said: “I try to be good all year round so that I don't have to quit anything for Lent but I might try cutting down how much sugar I have.”

Kate Rivers, 30, a support worker from Totton said: “I'm giving up all the sweet stuff this year, I'm the worst with chocolate so it's going to be tricky but I want to give it a go.”

John Duggan, 41, a landlord from Eastleigh said: “I'm going to try and give up beer but as I run a pub I don't know how successful I will be but it's good to set myself a challenge.”

Gail Matthews, 57, a cleaner from the New Forest said: “I like to think I'm quite good with stuff all year, I don't tend to get involved in Lent but I should probably try to quit smoking.”
